History of the Los Angeles Newspaper Group

Each of the newspapers comprising the group maintains a large and loyal subscriber base. Beginning with the founding of the Pasadena Star-News in 1884, the newspapers all have a well-established history of serving their respective local communities and those who reside within them.

Today, the growing population and continued sprawl of the Los Angeles market has made these surrounding communities too important to overlook. Together they account for over one-half of the L.A. DMA's total population, households and retail sales.

Purchase of the Press-Telegram of Long Beach from Knight-Ridder Inc.

January 1998
Purchase of Los Angeles Daily News from Jack Kent Cooke, Inc.

February 1999
Established ground-breaking partnership with C.I.P.S. (California Independent Postal Systems) America's largest audited independent postal system. The joint venture provides businesses the most efficient and widespread reach across the greater Los Angeles area.

April 1999
Acquisition of Inland Valley Daily Bulletin and Redlands Daily Facts from Donrey Media Group; San Bernardino Sun from Gannett Co., Inc.

June 2002
LANG forms key partnership with ADVO Inc., the nation's largest full-service direct mail marketing company, to distribute new "ShopWise™" inserts via newspapers and direct mail to over 2 million L.A. area households each week.

April 2003
Acquisition of the Internet domain LA.com

January 2004
LANG launches "ImpactoUSA", the L.A. area's largest ABC-audited weekend home-delivered Spanish-language newspaper, delivered to over 250,000 Hispanic households every Saturday around key retail locations.

April 2005
MediaNews Group enters into resale and distribution agreement with "Yahoo! HotJobs," teaming LANG's parent company with the country's leading job board and enabling users to access and share local job listings.

April 2006
Los Angeles Times, LANG and ADVO enter into joint preprint insert distribution arrangement, expanding "ShopWise™" to reach over 5 million Southern California households both mid and late-week. Each program is sold separately by each organization.

December 2006
Purchase of Torrance Daily Breeze and three weekly newspapers from The Copely Press, Inc., as part of previously announced agreement between Hearst and MediaNews Group, subject to regulatory approval.
